Lok Sabha Elections 2019: A day after holding a mega roadshow and performing Ganga aarti in the holy city, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday filed his nomination to contest the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 from Varanasi parliamentary constituency. While filing his nomination papers at the District Collectorate's office, PM Modi was accompanied by some of the top stalwart leaders of both Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in a massive show of strength for the country’s ruling alliance. Since Thursday evening, the saffron party has come out in full throttle along with massive support from workers and supporters for the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections which have so far witnessed three phases of polling.
Here are 10 major highlights of PM Modi’s and BJP’s journey to the holy land of Kashi since yesterday (April 25):
i. While filing nomination earlier in the day, PM Modi was accompanied by a galaxy of veteran leaders from across the country including Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar, Shiv Sena party chief Uddhav Thackrey, AIADMK's O Panneerselvam, Lok Janshakti Party president Ram Vilas Pawan, Shiromani Akali Dal's Parkash Singh, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, BJP President Amit Shah and many others.
ii. Four people proposed PM Modi's name - former principal of the Banaras Hindu University's women college Annapurna Shukla, 'Dom Raja' and 'chief cremator' Jagdish Chowdhary, from the family which lights every funeral pyre in the town, long time BJP worker Subhash Chander Gupta and agriculture scientist Ram Shanker Patel.
iii. Before reaching the Varanasi collectorate to file his nomination, Modi went to Kaal Bhairav temple in Varanasi to offer prayers. “The media will no longer have an interest in the Varanasi election as they won't get any more TRPs. They will also assume Modi has won,” PM Modi said earlier in the day.
iv. After filing his nomination, PM Modi also spoke to reporters outside the District Magistrate's office in Varanasi. “I deeply express gratitude towards people of Kashi. They have again blessed me after 5 years. Such a grand roadshow yesterday was possible only in Kashi,” he said. PM Modi also thanked people of Varanasi and his party workers for the love and respect they showered on him and the massive support to his roadshow. The Prime Minister also requested voters throughout the country to come out and vote peacefully.
v. Later in the day, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to address a public rally at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai where he will canvass for the NDA in Maharashtra. Even Congress President Rahul Gandhi will canvass for his party at Sangamner under Shirdi Lok Sabha constituency in Ahmednagar district around evening.
vi. While speaking to news agency ANI, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who was present in Varanasi said that there is no one in competition with PM Modi. The difference between Modi with Gandhis is just as between an elephant and ant.
vii. The prime minister, who reached here on Thursday and brought life to a standstill as he held a seven-kilometre roadshow through the town. “During yesterday's roadshow here, I got a sense of the hard work of party cadres," PM said amid chants of ‘Modi Modi’.
viii. Modi, who also participated in the ‘Ganga aarti’ at the Dashashwamedh ghat, addressed a late night meeting here on Thursday. While the last five years were about his government making sincere efforts, the next five will be about results, he said.
ix. In 2014, Modi won the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat, defeating Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by a massive margin of 3.37 lakh votes. Modi polled 5,16,593 votes -- about half the total votes -- while Congress' Ajay Rai finished third.
x. Putting an end to the speculations of Congress UP General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi contesting against PM Modi in Varanasi in Lok Sabha Elections, Congress has once again fielded Ajay Rai. Varanasi is set to go for polls on May 19 in the last phase of the national elections. Results for the Lok Sabha Elections are scheduled to be announced on May 23.
