Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Key Candidates
As the Lok Sabha elections are approaching nearer, political parties have started releasing their candidates' lists. So far, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has released a list of 267 candidates, while the Congress has named 82 candidates for the forthcoming polls. Among BJP's top candidates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to contest the Lok Sabha polls from UP's Varanasi constituency once again. He has already won from the seat twice and will be trying for a hat trick this time. PM Modi beat Aam Aadmi Party president and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in 2014, and Shalini Yadav of the Samajwadi Party in 2019.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who led the party to a landslide win in the 2014 general election, has been fielded to run for Lok Sabha polls from Gujarat's Gandhinagar constituency. Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani will contest the Amethi seat in Uttar Pradesh, where she defeated senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in 2019.
Meanwhile, Congress has repeated Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad, from where he registered a victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Among other notable Congress candidates, Gaurav Gogoi, the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, has been nominated to contest from Assam's Jorhat, while sitting MP Pradyut Bordoloi will represent Nagaon.
Rahul Kaswan, who recently switched from the BJP, will contest from Churu in Rajasthan. Harish Chandra Meena, a close confidant of senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot and former DGP, will contest from the Tonk-Sawai Madhopur constituency, and Karan Singh Uchiyarda will contest from Jodhpur.
Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Major Alliances
Pre-election coalitions are a fundamental aspect of the electoral landscape in India, particularly during the Lok Sabha elections. In the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, two major alliances will vie for dominance: the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition coalition known as I.N.D.I.A, or the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, which includes Congress, AAP, CPI(M), Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and DMK among others. What sets this election apart is the absence of the Congress-led UPA, which historically served as the primary Opposition to the NDA. In 2024, the Congress party is participating as part of the broader opposition alliance, which includes various other regional parties such as the SP, TMC, and DMK.
The NDA coalition, led by the BJP, includes parties such as JD(U), the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, the NCP led by Ajit Pawar, and JD(S), among others. In total, the NDA encompasses 39 parties, including several regional parties. The BJP, serving as the cornerstone of the alliance, secured 303 seats independently in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Presently, it holds 290 seats. The JD(U), led by Nitish Kumar, ranks as the second-largest member of the coalition, commanding 16 seats in the lower house.
The INDIA bloc is an alliance of both national and regional parties united to challenge the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. Congress, being the primus inter pares of the alliance, holds the largest number of seats in the Lok Sabha. However, with several influential regional parties also part of the alliance, negotiations for seat-sharing agreements in various states present a significant challenge. Notably, the TMC has opted to contest all 42 seats in West Bengal independently after failing to reach a consensus with Congress.
