Bypolls Results 2023: The Congress party and its allies in the Opposition bloc I.N.D.I.A have surged ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the results declared on Friday (September 8), following by-elections for seven assembly seats held on Tuesday (September 5). The alliance gained traction after a significant victory by its ally, the Samajwadi Party, in Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi. While BJP candidates secured wins in Tripura's Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly seats, as well as Uttarakhand's Bageswar, the Opposition secured victories in Jharkhand's Dumri, Kerala's Puthuppally, West Bengal's Dhugpuri, and Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi.
In Tripura, BJP's Tafajjal Hossain secured a win in the Boxanagar seat, while the tribal-dominated Dhanpur was claimed by Bindu Debnath.
In Uttarakhand's Bageswar, BJP's Parwati Dass emerged victorious after initially taking the lead, defeating Congress candidate Basant Kumar by a margin of over 2,400 votes. This by-election followed the passing of four-time MLA and cabinet minister Chandan Ram Das in April.
In a significant setback for the ruling CPI(M), Chandy Oommen of the Congress-UDF alliance triumphed in Kerala's Puthuppally by-election, securing a decisive victory with a margin of over 36,000 votes. In Jharkhand, Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Bebi Devi secured victory in the Dumri assembly seat, located in Giridih district, defeating All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) party nominee Yashoda Devi by a considerable margin of over 17,000 votes. Click here to read more.
In Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi seat, Sudhakar Singh of the Samajwadi Party defeated BJP defector Dara Singh Chauhan in a landslide victory. Singh received 1,24,427 votes, while Chauhan received the support of 81,668 voters. Following the resignation of sitting MLA Dara Singh Chauhan, a prominent OBC leader who rejoined the BJP after leaving the SP, a by-election was held in the Ghosi assembly constituency.
In West Bengal, the TMC's Nirmal Chandra Roy retained the Dhugpuri constituency, prevailing over a combined challenge from two INDIA bloc parties — the Congress and the CPI(M). This victory reaffirms the Mamata Banerjee-led party's control over the seat. Click here to read more.
