Andhra Pradesh Results 2024: Despite facing challenges, including a corruption case that led to his imprisonment by Jagan Reddy's government last year, Naidu has emerged as a key player in the polls.
Andhra Pradesh Results 2024: Chandrababu Naidu, the leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), has experienced a remarkable resurgence in Indian politics following a tumultuous period marked by setbacks and controversies. Despite facing significant challenges, including a corruption case that led to his imprisonment by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's government last year, Naidu has emerged as a key player in the recent elections, positioning himself as a kingmaker by sweeping both Lok Sabha elections and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh.
The Election Results of 2024 in Andhra Pradesh have showcased the shifting dynamics of the state's political landscape.
Andhra Pradesh Elections Results 2024
In the simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections held on May 13, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, opted to contest alone, while TDP formed an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jana Sena Party led by Pawan Kalyan.
According to the latest trends released by the Election Commission of India, the TDP alliance is leading in a significant number of seats. The TDP is currently leading in 132 Assembly seats, with YSRCP trailing behind in 16 seats. TDP's alliance partners, the Janasena party is leading in 20 seats, while the BJP is leading in 7 seats.
In terms of the General Elections, the TDP-Janasena-BJP alliance has maintained its dominance, with TDP leading in 16 seats, followed by BJP and Janasena in 3 and 2 seats respectively. The YSRCP, on the other hand, is leading in 4 Lok Sabha seats.
Resurgence Of TDP & Chandrababu Naidu
The political journey of Chandrababu Naidu has been characterised by twists and turns. A former ally of the NDA government, Naidu parted ways before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, aligning with the UPA alliance, only to face defeat in both Lok Sabha and assembly elections.
In 2019 Assembly Elections, YSRCP won 175 seats and reduced TDP to 23 seats. The Janasena party bagged 1 seat. In Lok Sabha elections last time, YSRCP won 22 seats while TDP secured 3 seats.
In the 2019 election, TDP chief faced defeat due to various factors. It was not unexpected, as Naidu sensed the shift in public sentiment when the demand for special category status gained momentum. His decision to accept a special financial package from the Centre, instead of pushing for special category status, was not well received by the people.
In addition to unfulfilled promises from the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, the state's poor financial condition, and the mounting pressure of completing major projects like the new capital Amaravati and the Polavaram irrigation project contributed to Naidu's challenges.
However, in March 2024, he rejoined the NDA, marking a strategic shift in his political alliances. The decision to form an alliance with BJP and Janasena for the 2024 elections was preceded by speculation. Pawan Kalyan, the leader of JanaSena, announced the alliance on September 14, 2023, aiming to challenge the incumbent YSRCP collectively, especially in the wake of Naidu's arrest.
The resurgence of Chandrababu Naidu and the TDP after their defeat in the 2019 elections was a wake-up call, prompting Naidu to reassess his strategies and alliances.
