2019 Lok Sabha polls | Madhya Pradesh: BJP expected to sweep away parliamentary seats in its Central India bastion

The Bharatiya Janata Party had swept away the general elections in the state held in 2014 winning 27 out of the 29 parliamentarian seats. It was a thumping win for the BJP and helped them cement their hegemony in the Hindi heartland states.

New Delhi: The election commission announced the dates of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on Sunday. The election shall be held across the 543 parliamentary constituencies in seven phases starting April 11. The Election Commission has announced that the 2019 Lok Sabha elections will be held between April 11 and May 19 in seven phases. The counting of votes will be held on May 23. 1st phase polling to be held on 11th April, 2nd phase on 18th April, 3rd phase on 23rd April, 4th phase polling to be held on 29th April, 5th phase polling on 6th May, 6th phase polling on 12th May, 7th phase 19th May. Counting of all phases shall be held on 23rd May. As per the ABP-C Voter Survey, BJP is expected to win 24 out of the 29 seats while the Congress shall bag a measly 5 seats. It was a thumping win for the BJP and helped them cement their hegemony in the Hindi heartland states. The outright win for the BJP was a significant contributor  in the party’s overall tally of 282 seats in the Lok Sabha. In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, there was a neck to neck fight between the BJP and the Congress in MP with the former winning 16 of the 29 seats in the state. While the Congress came second best with 12 seats, they improved considerably winning eight more seats than what they had won in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. On the contrary although BJP won more seats than the Congress, it took a severe hit in their performance since the last elections where they won 25 seats. 2004 Lok Sabha polls – BJP made it a one horse race election, winning 25 out of the 29 parliamentary constituencies. The Indian National Congress had a dismal outing, bagging just 4 seats. 2018 State Assembly Polls -  Shivraj Singh Chauhan-led BJP which had ruled the state for four consecutive terms, was eventually voted out of power. Congress could eventually managed to dethrone BJP from its saffron bastion in central India. The anti-incumbency against the BJP on issues like farmer distress and the Vyaapam scam gave the Congress the slight edge and helped them to just secure the mandate winning a 114 out of the 230 state assembly seats .
