Background

Madurai: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, R.Gopalakrishnan from All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) won the elections by a margin of 199424 votes. The polling / voting in Madurai constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 2 on 18 April. The major contest is between All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam#s V. V. R. Rajsathyan and Communist Party of India (Marxist)#s S. Venkatesan

Madurai 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 37 out of the 39 parliamentary seat with 44.3 percent vote share while the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to win just 1 seats with a 5.5 percent vote share.

Voter turnout in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Madurai Lok Sabha Lok Sabha constituency. The total voter turnout was 67.87% Lok Sabha percent with 67.81% Lok Sabha percent male voters turning out to cast their votes. Meanwhile, 67.93% Lok Sabha percent of the women voters cast their votes and 19765 Lok Sabha voters pressed on the NOTA

Out of the 31 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Madurai, 29 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of R.Gopalakrishnan of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam as he defeated V Velusamy by a margin of 199424 votes.

  • 2009 Lok Sabha Elections: In 15th Lok Sabha poll, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate defated Communist Party of India candidate in one-sided contest. Here, DMK candidate M. K. Alagiri attained 431295 votes and CPM's Mohan P bagged 290310 votes.
  • 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha poll, Communist Party of India candidate defated All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in one-sided contest. Here, CPM candidate Mohan, P. attained 414433 votes and ADMK's Bose, A K. bagged 281593 votes.
  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha election, Communist Party of India candidate defeated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate with a difference of 37223 votes. Here, Communist Party of India leader Mohan, P. attained 328204 votes and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate Muthuramalingam, Pon. bagged 290981 votes
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, JP candidate defeated TMC(M) candidate with a difference of 20897 votes. Here, JP leader Subramanian Swamy attained 266202 votes and TMC(M) candidate Rambabu.A.G.S. bagged 245305 votes
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha poll, TMC(M) candidate defated JD candidate in one-sided contest. Here, TMC(M) candidate Ram Babu A.G.S attained 334055 votes and JD's Subramanian Swamy bagged 144249 votes.
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defated Communist Party of India candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Ram Babu A.G.S. attained 425769 votes and CPM's Mohan P. bagged 183609 votes.
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate A.G.S. Ram Babu attained 456442 votes and DMK's V.Velusamy bagged 242664 votes.
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated Communist Party of India candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Subburaman A.G. attained 365948 votes and CPM's Sankariah N. bagged 192937 votes.
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated Communist Party of India candidate by a margin of 69195 votes INC(I) candidate Subburaman A.G. had got 292380 while CPM got Balassubramanyam A. votes.
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated CPM candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Swaminathan R.V. attained 299309 votes and CPM's Ramamurthi P. bagged 164964 votes.
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated NCO candidate by a margin of 72359 votes INC candidate R. V. Swaminathan had got 227060 while NCO got S. Chinna Karuppa Thevar votes.
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha poll, Communist Party of India candidate defated INC candidate in one-sided contest. Here, CPM candidate P. Ramamurti attained 261390 votes and INC's S. C. Thevar bagged 155922 votes.
  • 1962 Lok Sabha Elections: In Third Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated CPI candidate with a difference of 17188 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader N. M. R. Subbaraman attained 140574 votes and CPI candidate K. T. K. Tangamani bagged 123386 votes
  • 1957 Lok Sabha Elections: In Second Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Communist Party of India (Marxist) and INC here Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate defeated his INC counterpart with a difference of 1088 votes.
  • 1951 Lok Sabha Elections: In India's Very First Lok Sabha Polls, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated CPI candidate by a margin of 99726 votes INC candidate S. Balasubramaniam had got 195762 while CPI got Thangamani Nadar votes.
