Background

Barasat: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Dr. Kakali Ghoshdostidar from All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the elections by a margin of 173141 votes. The polling / voting in Barasat constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 7 on 19 May. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party#s Dr Mrinal Kanthi Debnath and All India Trinamool Congress#s Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar

Barasat 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, All India Trinamool Congress won 34 out of the 42 parliamentary seat with 39.8 percent vote share while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) managed to win just 2 seats with a 23 percent vote share.

Voter turnout in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Barasat Lok Sabha Lok Sabha constituency. The total voter turnout was 83.91% Lok Sabha percent with 85.97% Lok Sabha percent male voters turning out to cast their votes. Meanwhile, 81.75% Lok Sabha percent of the women voters cast their votes and 12700 Lok Sabha voters pressed on the NOTA

Out of the 12 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Barasat, 9 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of Dr. Kakali Ghoshdostidar of the All India Trinamool Congress as he defeated Dr. Mortoza Hossain by a margin of 173141 votes.

  • 2009 Lok Sabha Elections: In 15th Lok Sabha poll, All India Trinamool Congress candidate defated All India Forward Bloc candidate in one-sided contest. Here, AITC candidate Dr. (Smt.) Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar attained 522530 votes and AIFB's Sudin Chattopadhyay bagged 399629 votes.
  • 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha election, All India Forward Bloc candidate defeated All India Trinamool Congress candidate with a difference of 12160 votes. Here, All India Forward Bloc leader Subrata Bose attained 520384 votes and All India Trinamool Congress candidate Dr. Ranjit Kumar Panja bagged 508224 votes
  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha election, All India Trinamool Congress candidate had defeated FBL candidate by a margin of 96900 votes AITC candidate Dr.Ranjit Kumar Panja had got 518520 while FBL got Saral Deb votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, WBTC candidate had defeated FBL candidate by a margin of 66707 votes WBTC candidate Dr Ranjit Kumar Panja had got 499181 while FBL got Chitra Ghosh votes.
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha election, FBL candidate defeated Indian National Congress candidate with a difference of 35347 votes. Here, FBL leader Chitta Basu attained 484474 votes and Indian National Congress candidate Ranjit Kumar Panja bagged 449127 votes
  • 1991 Lok Sabha Elections: In 10th Lok Sabha election, FBL candidate defeated Indian National Congress candidate with a difference of 44421 votes. Here, FBL leader Chitta Basu attained 382896 votes and Indian National Congress candidate Ashok Krishna Dutt bagged 338475 votes
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha election, FBL candidate had defeated Indian National Congress candidate by a margin of 55369 votes FBL candidate Chitta Basu had got 448543 while INC got Tarun Kanti Ghosh votes.
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated FBL candidate with a difference of 12612 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Tarun Kanti Ghosh attained 343184 votes and FBL candidate Chitta Basu bagged 330572 votes
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha election, FBL candidate had defeated Indian National Congress candidate by a margin of 93920 votes FBL candidate Chitta Basu had got 297758 while INC(I) got Harasit Ghosh votes.
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha poll, FBL candidate defated CPI candidate in one-sided contest. Here, FBL candidate Chitta Basu attained 203694 votes and CPI's Ranen Sen bagged 87900 votes.
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Communist Party of India (Marxist) and CPM here Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate defeated his CPM counterpart with a difference of 9239 votes.
  • 1967 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fourth Lok Sabha election, Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate defeated INC candidate with a difference of 32571 votes. Here, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader R. N. Sen attained 143883 votes and INC candidate A. C. Guha bagged 111312 votes
  • 1962 Lok Sabha Elections: In Third Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated CPI candidate with a difference of 46803 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Arun Chandra Guha attained 188398 votes and CPI candidate Bhowani Sankar Sengupta bagged 141595 votes
  • 1957 Lok Sabha Elections: In Second Lok Sabha election, interesting battle could be seen between Indian National Congress and CPI here Indian National Congress candidate defeated his CPI counterpart with a difference of 6041 votes.
