Vacate 13 Decimals Of Land By May 6: Visva Bharati University Tells Amartya Sen

The Visva Bharati University in a notice has asked Amartya Sen to vacate the excessive 13 decimals of land under his occupation inside the university premises by May 6, 2023.

In the ongoing Visva Bharati - Amartya Sen land dispute case, the central university has released an eviction order asking Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen to vacate the 13 decimals of land in the university which he has been allegedly occupying by May 6, 2023, or within 15 days of the publication of the last order on April 19, 2023. A notice released by the university in this regard states that “Amartya Kumar sen and all concerned persons are liable to be evicted from the said promises, if need be, by use of such force as necessary.”

It is decided that 13 decimals of land having the dimension of 50 ft x 111 ft in the north-west corner of the scheduled premises is to be recovered from him. "Thus he can lawfully occupy 1.25 acres of land only, as lesses (for the residual period of lease) in the scheduled premises. Hed does not have the authority to occupy 1.38 acres of land in the scheduled premises,” the notice added further.

Notably, the Visva Bharati University in Bolpur, Shantiniketan and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen have been engaged in a dispute over a portion of land, allegedly occupied by the latter. Earlier on April 16, 2023, the university issued an ‘eviction notice’ on Sen’s Shantiniketan residence, ‘Patrichi.’ The order was pasted on the main gate of Sen’s residence.

The varsity has also stated that Sen’s reply in the matter has been factually incorrect, and it was the university who is the rightful owner of the land. However, Sen has said that the 13 decimals of land at the centre of the conflict here was bought by his father and he has all the necessary documents of the same.

The Visva Bharati University has been claiming that Sen possesses an excess of 13 decimals land over his legal entitlement of 1.25 acres. However Sen has been denying the charges and alleged harassment by the university since he voices against the actions of the university chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty and the Modi government.
