Union Govt Tables Bill In Lok Sabha To Establish Central Tribal University In Telangana
Earlier, PM Modi announced in October this year that a new ‘Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University’ will be established in the Mulug district of Telangana with an expenditure of Rs 900 crore.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan presented a bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday to establish a Central Tribal University in Telangana. As per the statements and objects of the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, the establishment of the new ‘Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University’ will cater to the regional aspirations for years to come, news agency PTI reported.
The new Central Tribal University in Telangana will serve as a catalyst to enhance the access and quality of higher education and also uplift higher education and research facilities for the people of Telangana, it was further reported as saying. By providing instructional and research facilities in tribal art, culture and customs and advancement in technology, the new varsity will also promote and cater advanced knowledge systems to the tribal population of the country.
"Apart from bringing focus to tribal education, the central tribal university shall carry out all educational and other activities like any other central university," the statements and objects of the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was further reported as saying by PTI. Notably, the establishment of a Central Tribal University in Telangana is obligatory under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

Earlier on October 1 this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a public meeting in Temangana’s Mahbubnagar, announced the establishment of a new ‘Central Tribal University’ in the ‘Mulug’ district of Telangana, named after tribal goddesses ‘Sammakka and Sarakka,’ worshipped in Telangana. He further underlined that a sum of Rs 900 crore will be earmarked to build and develop the university.
During the public event in Mahbubnagar, PM Modi also virtually inaugurated five new buildings at the University of Hyderabad (UoH). The newly inaugurated b buildings at the University of Hyderabad include the School of Economics, School of Mathematics and Statistics, School of Management Studies, Lecture Hall Complex – III, and Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication (Annexe).
Days after PM Modi’s announcement in October, the Union cabinet approved an amendment to the Central Universities Act, 2009 for the setting up of the recently announced Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in Telangana.
