Assam To File FIRs Against Those Responsible For Irregularities In School Uniform Distribution

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that after the Lok Sabha polls, the state govt will start taking actions against those responsible for irregularities in uniform distribution.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday that the state government will register police complaints against those found responsible for irregularities in distributing school uniforms to children. During the question hour in the Assam assembly, Sarma said that the state government would start taking actions after the Lok Sabha elections this year, considering allegations of irregularities in school uniform distribution in the state. 

"We give funds for giving school uniforms to students free of cost. However, when I visit different places, I find that uniforms in some schools are of good quality and some are not," Sarma was quoted as saying  by news agency PTI, adding that the management of some government schools don’t utilise funds in appropriate ways. 

"Our aim this year is to provide good quality uniforms to every student of Assam. I request all MLAs to visit the schools in their areas and put a grade against the uniforms in the schools. If any school gets a 'C' grade, please inform us. We will take action then," he added.

The Assam chief minister further underlined the commitment of the state government to revamp the education system in the state and provide proper uniforms alongside good quality mid-day meals. "This time, we will file FIRs against the irregularities and those involved in it. We will start taking action after the Lok Sabha elections," he added. to government school students in the state. IUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam raised the issue following a question asked by BJP legislator Dharmeswar Konwar, regarding irregularities in school uniform distribution in the state. 

In its bid to revamp the education system in the state, the Assam government also introduced the Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024. The bill is aimed at merging 10th and 12th boards into a single entity for a better control and regulation of school education till Class 12 in the state.
