Noida Shocker: Denied Fortuner In Dowry, Husband, In-Laws Beat Woman To Death

A woman in Noida has allegedly been beaten to death by her in-laws for not being able to meet the dowry demands, police said on Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Karishma, was married to Vikas in December 2022 and lived in Kheda Chauganpur village under the Ecotech 3 police station area in Noida.

Karishma's in-laws started pressuring her to get an additional dowry, which included a Toyota Fortuner and Rs 21 lakh, the complaint made by her brother Deepak read.

Deepak also alleged that his family gave gold worth Rs 11 lakh as well as an SUV to the groom's family at the time of the wedding. 

However, Vikas' family demanded more dowry and started physically and mentally abusing Karishma, he claimed.

He also alleged that the abuse got worse after Karishma gave birth to a girl. Karishma's family tried to sort out the issue through panchayat meetings at Vikas' village. 

The victim's brother added that Karishma's family even paid another Rs 10 lakh to his family but the abuse didn't stop. 

Police have arrested Karishma's husband Vikas and her father-in-law.  

A police spokesperson said that they received an information on March 29 that the accused had demanded additional dowry from the complainant's sister and when the demand was not met, Karishma was tortured and beaten to death.

On the basis of the victim's brother's complaint, an FIR was lodged at the Ecotech 3 police station under IPC sections 498A (cruelty inflicted on married woman), 304B (dowry death), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and under provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and investigation taken up.

Following the FIR, the husband Vikas Bhati alias Bittu and his father Sompal Bhati were arrested by the local police from a service road in Ecotech 3 area on March 31.

The two were later produced in a court which has remanded them in judicial custody, the police said, adding efforts are underway to nab other accused in the case.
