MCD Will Not Send Any Property Tax Notices To Rural Areas, Says Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has set a deadline of December 31 to pay the house tax.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided not to send any notices regarding property tax to people residing in rural areas this year, Mayor Shelly Oberoi said in a media briefing on Saturday, news agency PTI reported. Taking a dig at BJP, Mayor Shelly stated: "AAP-led MCD has decided to not send any notices regarding property tax to people residing in rural areas of Delhi unlike the BJP which passed the resolution in its tenure regarding property tax notices to harass the people."

Earlier last month, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had set a deadline of December 31 to pay the house tax. The local council issued a strong warning, stating that failing to pay the unpaid sum will result in legal action, including a substantial fine and imprisonment for up to 7 years.

“The assessment and collection department of the MCD, after analysing data related to property tax dues, has identified owners whose property tax dues are above Rs 25 lakh. The MCD will soon take legal action against the defaulters and will file prosecution against them. According to the Municipal Act, in case of property tax dues crossing `25 lakh, it may result in punishment of rigorous imprisonment from 3 months to 7 years with a fine of not less than 50% of the amount of tax evaded,” the MCD was quoted by The New Indian Express in its report.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi had collected nearly Rs 1,110 crore in property tax from April to June this year, a 40% increase over the same period the previous year. "A property tax of Rs 1,113 crore has been collected by the MCD," Oberoi had stated.

The property tax collected in 2021-22 was Rs 695 crore, up from Rs 540 crore in 2020-21.
