Gas Leak Fear Prompts School Evacuation In West Delhi's Naraina. NDRF, Police, Fire Service Rushed To Spot
The Delhi Fire Service had suspicions that some form of chemical fumes or gas, with a pungent smell, were leaking from containers housed within the godown premises.
A noxious odor emanating from a gas godown in West Delhi's Naraina area prompted the evacuation of students from a nearby school on Monday, according to police officials cited by news agency PTI. Swift action was taken as teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police, and Delhi Fire Service rapidly came together on the scene to facilitate the evacuation process.
"PCR calls were received regarding a foul smell in the area of C-block, Naraina. After receiving the calls, the concerned agencies promptly responded to the situation and implemented the necessary precautionary measures," The Deputy Commissioner of Police (west), Vichitra Veer, informed, as quoted by PTI.
While the investigation is still underway, Vichitra Veer added, "We are examining the matter. Appropriate legal action will be initiated based on the facts."
According to a senior police officer, the incident appears to be linked to an open plot in the vicinity where a specific type of chemical was stored. Samples of the substance have been collected and dispatched for analysis, PTI's report mentioned. The initial assessment suggested it could be thinner, but its exact nature will be determined following further examination. The authorities are in the process of registering a case related to the incident.
The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) reported receiving a distress call at 12.18 p.m. from an individual who reported a potential gas or chemical leak from drums stored in a godown, the report mentioned.
PTI reported a DFS official as informing that they promptly dispatched a fire tender to the location. Subsequently, three more fire tenders were deployed as the situation demanded. Earlier, the DFS had suspicions that some form of chemical fumes or gas, with a pungent smell, were leaking from containers housed within the godown premises.
The nature of the gas or fumes remains unidentified at this stage. In response to the situation, the area was cordoned off by teams from the police, NDRF, and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). To contain the gas leakage, water sprinkling was executed, as stated by the DFS official.
