'Goons Lost, People Won': Delhi CM Kejriwal, AAP Leaders React To Shelly Oberoi Winning Mayor Poll
AAP leaders, including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, congratulated Shelly Oberoi for winning the Delhi mayor polls. They said hooliganism had been defeated and people of Delhi had won.
Aam Admi Party convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that Shelly Oberoi's win in the mayor polls showed that 'hooliganism' had been defeated. He said that Oberoi's win meant that the people of Delhi had emerged victorious. He, however, did not name anyone in particular.
Oberoi won against BJP councillor Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes on Wednesday in the election to the top post in the much-awaited first meeting of new elected Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) .
Kejriwal's tweet in Hindi read: "The goons lost, the public won. In the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the people of Delhi won and hooliganism was defeated. Congratulations to the people of Delhi on Shelly Oberoi being elected mayor."
Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, too, said that "goons had lost". "The goons lost, the public won. Many congratulations to all the workers on becoming the Mayor of Aam Aadmi Party in Municipal Corporation of Delhi and once again whole hearted gratitude to the people of Delhi. Many many congratulations to the first Mayor @OberoiShelly of AAP," he tweeted in Hindi.
AAP MP in Rajya Sabha Raghav Chadha said that Oberoi had overcome a "hundred obstacles set up by a mighty BJP", with the win. "Delhi. Wins. Again. Congratulations to the people of Delhi on finally getting ‘AAP ka Mayor’. Another milestone for @AamAadmiParty despite hundred obstacles created by a mighty BJP. This is a victory of truth over lies and falsehood. Gundey haare, janta jeeti," he tweeted.
Another Rajya Sabha MP from AAP, Sanjay Singh said that it was the start of a new innings. "Start of new innings. @ArvindKejriwal AAP's flag hoisted in MCD under the leadership of G. Hearty congratulations to @OberoiShelly on becoming the Mayor of Delhi," he tweeted.
Soon after winning, Delhi's newly elected mayor Shelly Oberoi said: "We have to work together to fulfil aspirations of people: Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi tells MCD House after taking charge. We will work on 10 guarantees that CM Arvind Kejriwal has given to people."
The election of mayor was held on Wednesday after the Supreme Court recently ordered that the 10 aldermen appointed by the Lt Governor VK Saxena cannot vote in the election. Aldermen are the MCD members who were nominated to the civic body by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.
Three previous attempts to elect a mayor for Delhi had no result as the AAP and BJP fought in the MCD House meetings over the issue of appointment of a pro tem mayor and aldermen.
