Bajirao I: A Legendary Maratha Leader
Peshwa Bajirao I served as the Prime Minister under Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj from 1720 to 1740. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful military leaders in Indian history, having expanded the Maratha empire significantly during his tenure. Historical accounts note that Bajirao I never lost a single battle, cementing his legacy as a formidable strategist and warrior.
Speaking to reporters, MP Kulkarni explained that the purpose behind the renaming is to bring attention to Pune’s illustrious historical and cultural heritage. "Pune is known as a cultural and educational hub, and more recently as an IT destination. But it is important that people from across the country also learn about its rich past," she said.
Pune has long been associated with the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Peshwa dynasty. The iconic Shaniwar Wada, a symbol of Peshwa rule, stands in the heart of the city. Kulkarni believes renaming the station would honour this legacy and preserve it for future generations.
