Nagpur Schools, Colleges Declare Holiday Today Amid Heavy Rainfall Forecast

Since the onset of the monsoon, Nagpur district has received 248.9mm of rainfall, slightly above the normal average of 247mm for the period. July alone has accounted for 148.9mm of this total.

All schools and colleges across Nagpur, Maharashtra, will remain closed today (July 9) due to continuous rainfall and the forecast of further heavy showers. District Collector Vipin Itankar has ordered the closure of all educational institutions.

Yellow Alert Issued In Nagpur

Nagpur city and its surrounding rural regions were battered by heavy rainfall for the second straight day on Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the evening. The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Wednesday.

According to data from the surface observatory at Sonegaon, Nagpur recorded 69.7mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 pm, with a significant 67.7mm falling between 8:30 am and 8:30 pm on Tuesday. Several tehsils in the district witnessed very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall:

Bhiwapur received 118.6 mm

Ramtek: 107mm

Mauda & Katol: 100.3mm each

Parshivni: 99.9mm

Kuhi: 98.2mm

Kamptee: 88.8mm

Umred: 80.8mm

Saoner: 65.2mm

Kalmeshwar: 68.7mm

Hingna: 57.5mm

Narkhed: 53.6mm

Nagpur (rural): 64.7mm

Since the onset of the monsoon on June 1, Nagpur district has received 248.9mm of rainfall, slightly above the normal average of 247mm for the period. July alone has accounted for 148.9mm of this total. There were no reports of loss of life or major property damage. However, six households were affected, including one each in Saoner and Mauda, and four in Ramtek. Local authorities have begun assessing crop damage in the affected areas.

Looking ahead, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Wednesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning at isolated locations. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow official advisories.
