Mumbai Schools & Colleges To Remain Closed On Thursday As IMD Issues Red Alert For 'Extremely Heavy Rainfall'

IMD has forecast "extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places” in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts on September 26.

Mumbai rains: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced on Wednesday that all schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed on Thursday, September 26. This comes after the India Meteorological Department on Wednesday issued a red alert in Mumbai and its neighbouring districts. The weather department has forecast "extremely heavy rainfall" till 8:30 AM on Thursday.

"The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, till tomorrow morning 8.30am. In view of this, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have been declared a holiday for tomorrow Thursday, 26 September 2024, in consideration of the safety of students," BMC stated in a post on X.

The BMC administration also requested Mumbaikars to not step out of their homes unless it was required.

As Mumbai and its surrounding areas received heavy rainfall today, the city experienced massive traffic snarls and waterlogging. The local trains also ran behind on their schedule and two flights were diverted. Seven other flights were forced to make a go-around at Mumbai airport due to the torrential rains.

Earlier, the IMD had sounded an orange alert, but later, at 5:30 PM, it was upgraded to a red alert. IMD forecast noted that Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts will receive "extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places" on Tursday.

A red alert has also been issued for Palghar, while an orange alert has been issued for Thane, Raigad, Mumbai and Pune for September 26. The Met department has issued an orange alert for Nashik and Dhule districts in north Maharashtra.
