Mumbai: Mobile Phone Bursts Inside Monorail, Causes Panic; Officials Relieved Train Wasn't Moving

Mumbai News: A passenger's phone exploded, causing a commotion inside Monorail. Officials have urged passengers to exercise caution when using mobile phones.

Mumbai News: There was chaos and panic inside a Monorail rake Wednesday morning when a passenger's mobile phone exploded and caught fire. The incident occurred at 9:35 am when the train was at the GTB Nagar station. No one was injured, Monorail officials confirmed.

According to the Maha Mumbai Metro Corporation Limited (MMMOCL), the fire safety protocols were promptly activated following the incident. The affected train is currently under investigation, and all passengers were safely evacuated to continue their respective onward journeys.

MMMOCL took to their official X (formerly Twitter) handle to inform the public about the incident. "We're relieved to report that no injuries were sustained thanks to the prompt response of our staff and security team," it posted, adding: "Safety is our top priority, and fire safety procedures were immediately implemented. The affected train is undergoing investigation and safety checks, and passengers have been safely evacuated to continue their journey."

Evacuation Was Easy Because Train Was Not Moving: Official

An MMMOCL official said it was good that the incident took place when the train was standing at a station, and not moving, which helped in the safe evacuation of passengers.

The official also urged passengers to exercise caution while using mobile phones, even as he emphasised that the MMMOCL was equipped to handle exigencies and has powerful firefighting equipment on the monorail rakes.

Mumbai Monorail, the first of its kind in India, travels a distance of 20-odd kilometres and serves as a vital mode of transportation for the city’s residents.
