Heavy Rains Lash Maharashtra: IMD Issues Orange Alert for Mumbai, Schools Shut in Raigad

Maharashtra is experiencing intensified monsoon rains, prompting alerts across regions. Mumbai is facing an Orange Alert with disrupted train services. Raigad has declared school holidays.

The monsoon has once again intensified across Maharashtra, with continuous heavy rainfall reported over the past 12 hours. Torrential downpours accompanied by strong winds have been lashing Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Navi Mumbai.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted active monsoon conditions across the state from June 19 to June 22. Due to cyclonic wind systems and the strengthening monsoon, various regions—including Konkan, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha—are likely to receive rainfall of varying intensities.

Orange Alert Issued For Mumbai

The IMD has upgraded its warning for Mumbai from a Yellow to an Orange Alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the city today. Rainfall is expected to exceed 70 mm in some areas. Since morning, downpours have affected normal life, with train services on Central and Western lines experiencing delays.

Raigad Declares School Holiday Amid Red Alert

In view of the extremely heavy rainfall warning, schools and colleges in several parts of Raigad district—including Alibag, Roha, Tala, Mahad, and Poladpur—have been closed. The district administration issued the directive after the Kundalika River near Roha reached warning levels due to Monday’s rains. Strong winds and further heavy showers are expected today.

Pune, Lonavala Experience Steady Showers

Rain began early in the morning in Pune, continuing steadily throughout various parts of the city and disrupting daily routines. Lonavala witnessed a downpour as well, receiving 221 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Notably, Pune district has recorded 1,166 mm of rainfall this year so far, significantly higher than the 323 mm recorded by this date last year.

Rain Forecast Across Key Regions

Konkan Coast: Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri are under red alert for extremely heavy rainfall on June 19.
Western Maharashtra: Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, and Nashik are expected to receive heavy rainfall today, with moderate to heavy showers continuing from June 20 to 22.

North Maharashtra: Dhule, Nandurbar, and Jalgaon are likely to experience rain accompanied by gusty winds.

Marathwada & Central Maharashtra: Light to moderate showers with thunder and lightning are predicted in Ahmednagar, Solapur, Sangli, Satara, Pune, Kolhapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed, Latur, Nanded, Hingoli, and Parbhani. Latur is specifically expected to see thunderstorm activity on June 20.

Vidarbha: The IMD has warned of strong winds and heavy rains in Akola, Amravati, Nagpur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Gondia, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, and Washim.

Authorities have advised residents and farmers to exercise caution, especially in riverine and hilly regions. Tourists and locals in vulnerable areas have been urged to stay alert.
