NEET Aspirant Found Dead In Kota Hostel, 12th Case In Coaching Hub This Year

An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Bihar was found dead in his hostel room in Kota, Rajasthan.

An 18-year-old student preparing for the National Entrance Eligibility Exam (NEET) for admission to undergraduate medical courses was found dead in his hostel room in Rajasthan's Kota on Tuesday, according to the police.

The student was originally from Bihar's Chhapra and had arrived in Kota a year ago, said Arvind Singh Bharadwaj, a local police officer, reported Hindustan Times.

“On Tuesday morning, he hung himself from the ceiling fan of his hostel room,” said the police officer.

A note was recovered from his hostel room where he said neither pressure of NEET nor his family should be held responsible, Bharadwaj said, adding rest of the details cannot be shared as they seemed to be "personal".

Suicide Cases In Kota

The latest suicide has taken the number of such cases in the coaching hub to 12 this year, as per the report. Last year, 20 students died by suicide in the city.

Students from all over the country arrive in Kota which is considered the hub of India's test preparation business, estimated to be worth Rs 10,000.

According to police records, 15 students died by suicide in Kota in 2022, 18 in 2019, 20 in 2018, seven in 2017, 17 in 2016, and 18 the previous year.

The city reported zero suicide cases in 2020 and 2021 as coaching institutes remained shut or operated in online mode due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, the Union education minister issued instructions for running the coaching institutions and restricted the enrolment to students only above the age of 16. The minister also warned of a penalty of Rs 10,000 for non-compliance with the instruction by the coaching centres.

In March, a bill for regulating the coaching centres was tabled in the Rajasthan assembly. The Rajasthan Coaching Centres (Control and Regulation) Bill, 2025 seeks to regulate the coaching institutes to ensure transparency, fair practices, and student safety.
