Kolkata Gang Rape: BJP, Congress Slam CM Mamata, TMC Hits Back With 'Aparajita Bill Apathy' Jibe

A law student's alleged gang rape in Kolkata has sparked outrage, with the BJP and Congress slamming the Mamata Banerjee government. BJP claims a TMC leader is the prime suspect.

The alleged gang rape of a law college student in Kolkata has the state on boil. The BJP and Congress have slammed the Mamata Banerjee government over the alleged "recurrence" of such crimes. Bengal Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that one of the perpetrators of the Kolkata gang rape is a Trinamool Congress leader.

"Among the three accused, the prime suspect has been identified as Manojit Mishra (31), a powerful leader of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). The police arrested him last evening near the Siddhartha Shankar Ray Children's Park, close to Talbagan Crossing. The other two accused, identified as Jaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), have also been arrested," Adhikari said.

"TMCP leaders have repeatedly misused their power to create an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness in educational spaces... Security must be strengthened in all educational institutions to ensure that leaders of the Trinamool Congress's student wing are never able to repeat such acts in the future," he added.

Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said: "This comes soon after the brutal rape and murder of a lady doctor at RG Kar. How many more daughters must suffer before the TMC government wakes up? West Bengal is bleeding, and women are unsafe under Mamata Banerjee’s rule. The culture of impunity must end."

The BJP said: "Preliminary reports suggest the student was first taken to a bathroom and later into a room after she raised an alarm."

Congress workers staged a protest against the West Bengal government in Kolkata. Bengal Congress general secretary Ashutosh Chatterjee says, "It is very shameful. Such incidents happen only due to corruption. The Chief Minister should immediately intervene and take immediate action."

Meanwhile, South Calcutta Law College Vice-Principal Nayna Chatterji said: “I have heard that the police had come here and after that, a student has been arrested. The President has said that a meeting will be held on Monday.”

The Trinamool Congress said: "This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments. It is extremely unfortunate that the BJP government at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented."
