Jalandhar Cop Faces Probe After Video Shows Him Beating Young Men, Police Blame ‘Verbal Abuse’

A video showing a police officer assaulting three young men on the streets of Bhogpur, Jalandhar district of Punjab, went viral on social media. The footage which was recorded on a smartphone, depicts Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jaswinder Singh brutally beating the young men, who can be heard pleading for mercy.
The incident took place at night, with bystanders watching in shock as the uniformed ASI repeatedly beat the young men. The video captures the officer slapping the men, who cry out in pain. The clip quickly spread online, sparking widespread outrage and raising serious concerns about police conduct in the area.
According to India Today, the young men asserted in the video that the actions of the officer were unjustified and unprovoked and that they had been assaulted without any provocation.

Jalandhar Police Claim Young Men In Video Hurled Verbal Abuse, Probe Launched
The Jalandhar Police took to X and informed that the Senior Superintendent Of Police (SSP) Jalandhar Rural had sent an ASI from Police station Bhogpur to Police Lines as a disciplinary measure following an inquiry by DSP Adampur that found him guilty of public misconduct. Departmental action has also been initiated, the post stated.

In the video shared by the police, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sumit Sood, of Jalandhar Rural highlighted a different story angle. According to the DSP, the incident occurred on Saturday evening when ASI Jaswinder Singh was stationed at a checkpoint in Bhogpur, along with a police team that included a female officer.
The DSP reported that three young men approached the checkpoint on a motorcycle, and when signaled to stop, they allegedly responded with verbal abuse and tried to flee.
According to the police, ASI Jaswinder pursued and apprehended the youths. The DSP claimed that the young men initiated a physical confrontation, prompting the ASI to defend himself. The matter is currently under further investigation.
