'Torture Of Dalit Woman By Police': Telangana Deputy CM Says Govt 'Won't Tolerate' Such Incidents

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka had earlier ordered a thorough investigation promising that those responsible would face consequences and justice would be served.

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka announced on Tuesday that the state government would not tolerate incidents like the recent alleged torture of a Dalit woman at the Shadnagar police station. Stating that the government is inspired by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's welfare policies, Vikramarka assured that the state government would not tolerate such incidents and provide medical treatment to the victim and stand by her family.

Further, he directed senior police officials to take strict action against those involved and ensure such incidents do not recur.

In response to the incident, a Detective Inspector and five constables were suspended on Monday. The Chief Minister had earlier ordered a thorough investigation, promising that those responsible would face consequences and justice would be served, reported PTI.

Earlier, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, currently on a visit to the US has instructed Vikramarka to gather details about the incident. He also ordered to support the victim's family and take action against the involved policemen.

Reacting to the incident, BRS Working President K T Rama Rao criticised the Congress government, calling it shameful that a Dalit woman was allegedly tortured by the police. Reports claim the woman was called to the police station over allegations of gold theft and was assaulted in the presence of her minor son.

A 34-year-old woman, who works as a daily wage laborer, recounted that her husband was initially beaten and then let go. Following this, she was compelled to take off her sari and put on shorts. She accused the police officers of restraining her by tying her hands and feet before assaulting her. Despite her desperate pleas, she claimed, they did not stop, according to a report on The News Minute.
