Jaipur: Several Students Faint After Suspected Gas Leak At Coaching Centre, 10 Hospitalised

According to media reports, nearly two dozen students fainted after poisonous gas leaked from a drain at the coaching centre, which made them ill.

At least ten students were admitted to a hospital after they fainted due to suffocation after a suspected gas leak on the premises of a private coaching institute in Jaipur, Rajasthan on Sunday evening. Two of these students have been admitted in an ICU.

The incident took place at Utkarsh Coaching Classes located in the city's Gopalpura area at around 6:45 PM when an unusual odour began emanating in the classroom. According to media reports, nearly two dozen students fainted after poisonous gas leaked from a drain, which made them ill.

"The students complained of difficulty in breathing and severe headache before they were rushed to the hospital," police told news agency PTI.

"Ten students of the institute fainted due to a suspected gas leak from the drain. Some smoke from the kitchen on the terrace of the building had also come in," police said.

A purported video from outside the coaching centre has surfaced on social media, showing people helping the fainted students out of the premises and rushing them for medical attention after the suspected gas leak.

As of now, the condition of the students is said to be stable with two of them receiving treatment in an ICU. The exact number of students who were affected by the incident remains unknown. Officials have dismissed the possibility of food poisoning, PTI reported.

A private hospital doctor said that seven children were brought to the medical facility after they complained of breathing issues.

According to media reports, Jaipur police has said the matter will be investigated and legal action will be taken against those found responsible for the incident.

Several student leaders, including former Rajasthan University Student Union President Nirmal Choudhary, gathered outside the hospital where the students were admitted, demanding action against the coaching centre where the gas leak took place, News 18 reported.

A report by Jansatta stated that following the incident, a massive crowd of students gathered outside the coaching centre, which comes under the Maheshwar Nagar police station area of Jaipur.
