Senior IPS officer Deven Bharti has been appointed the new chief of Mumbai Police. Bharti, who served as the Mumbai Police Special Commissioner, will succeed IPS officer Vivek Phansalkar in the new role.
In January 2023, Bharti was appointed as Mumbai's first special police commissioner, and he was one of the longest-serving joint commissioners of police (law and order) in the city.
Bharti, a 1994-batch officer, also headed the Maharashtra State Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) and was the additional commissioner of police (crime branch).
The officer has been involved in the probe into several major crimes reported in the city, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
Bharti, who hails from Darbhanga in Bihar, graduated from the Delhi School of Economics.
He was transferred to the state security corporation as an additional DG when the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) came to power in Maharashtra.
