India To Get 'Bus That Runs In Air'? Gadkari Says It Will Carry 150 Passengers
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari noted that his observations of Dehradun’s traffic, both by road and helicopter, indicated an urgent need for innovative infrastructure planning.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has proposed an innovative transport solution to address the growing problem of traffic congestion in Uttarakhand's Dehradun. Gadkari said the traditional measures are no longer sufficient to tackle urban transport challenges. He said he wanted to start a double-decker bus system that would operate above ground level.
"To reduce traffic in Dehradun, I want to start a double-decker bus that will run on air. 125–150 people will travel by air," he said during his address during the convocation ceremony at Graphic Era University in Dehradun.

Gadkari Asks Uttarakhand Govt To Send Proposal For 'Air Bus'
He called on the Uttarakhand state government to come forward with a detailed proposal for the project, assuring that once submitted, full assistance would be provided by the central government. Gadkari noted that his observations of Dehradun’s traffic, both by road and helicopter, indicated an urgent need for innovative infrastructure planning.
Beyond traffic management, Gadkari also emphasised the broader role of technology and sustainability in India's development. He urged educational institutions to promote value-based education and highlighted the potential of waste-to-energy initiatives, particularly the production of green hydrogen fuel.
He also underlined the importance of transitioning towards cleaner transport options, including electric and mechanised vehicles, to not only address environmental concerns but also improve the quality of life.
Garkari Conferred With Honorary Doctorate
During the event, Gadkari was conferred with an honorary doctorate by Graphic Era University in recognition of his contributions to infrastructure and governance. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, also present at the ceremony, commended Gadkari's vision and support for the state’s road and transport development, including expressways and logistic hubs.
Dhami reiterated the state’s commitment to advancing education and innovation under the National Education Policy, mentioning progress in fields like AI and big data.
