IIM Calcutta Rape Accused Remanded To 7-Day Police Custody

Mahaveer Toppannavar, also known as Parmanand Jain, accused in the IIM Kolkata rape case, will remain in police custody until July 19th.

The accused in the IIM Kolkata alleged rape case, Mahaveer Toppannavar alias Parmanand Jain, has been sent to police custody till July 19. He was arrested on the basis of the FIR filed by the woman at the Haridevpur police station. After hearing both sides, the additional chief judicial magistrate at Alipore court granted police remand of the accused till July 19.

Kolkata Police Chief Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal said that he asked for police custody, and the accused asked for bail. He also said that the accused side claimed that it was consensual. Replying to which, Ghosal said that the prima facie investigation shows that a crime was committed, and the medical evidence supports the victim.

"We asked for police custody, and the accused asked for bail. They argued that it was consensual. We argued that no, the prima facie investigation shows that crime was committed, and the medical evidence supports the victim. The court granted police custody till July 19…,” Ghosal said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

A woman studying at the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta was allegedly raped by a student inside a hostel of the business school, police said on Saturday. The accused was arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged by the woman at Haridevpur Police Station, they said. The alleged incident inside the boys’ hostel of IIM-Calcutta took place on Friday, a police officer said.

The woman stated in the FIR that she was called to the hostel for a counselling session. She then became unconscious after consuming a drink laced with drugs at the hostel. The woman realised she had been raped after regaining consciousness, he said. She also alleged that the accused had threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone, the officer said.

The accused student was detained last night before being formally arrested, he said. The development comes almost a fortnight after a student was allegedly gangraped inside a law college in Kolkata.
