Heavy Rains Lash Bihar: Patna Faces Waterlogging As IMD Issues Yellow Alert For 27 Districts

Bihar experiences increased monsoon activity with varied rainfall, causing severe waterlogging in Patna. A yellow alert is issued for 27 districts due to potential thunderstorms and strong winds.

Monsoon activity has picked up pace across Bihar, bringing a mix of light and heavy rainfall in various parts of the state. Overnight downpours in Patna have led to severe waterlogging, with areas around Patna Junction, Kankarbagh, and Patna City submerged under nearly two feet of water, disrupting daily life for residents.

Yellow Alert Issued for 27 Districts In Bihar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed 27 districts under a yellow alert for Monday, warning of potential lightning, thunder, and rain. Strong winds ranging between 30 to 40 kilometers per hour are also expected to accompany these weather conditions.

Authorities have urged residents in the affected districts to stay updated on weather advisories and exercise caution during thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall. The IMD also predicted a drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures, which could offer some respite from the heat.

Monsoon Deficit Persists

Despite the recent showers, Bihar continues to struggle with a significant monsoon deficit. According to IMD data, the state has received an average of 258.0 mm of rainfall from June 1 to July 27, 2025, which is 43% less than the normal for this period. This indicates that drought-like conditions remain in several regions. Notably, Gaya is the only district that has recorded 20% more rainfall than normal.

Weather System in Bay of Bengal

Experts at the Patna Meteorological Center have attributed the increased rainfall activity to a new system forming in the Bay of Bengal. While light to moderate rain is expected across many parts of Bihar over the next two to three days, there is also a possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

Patna Forecast: Cloudy with Chances of Rain

The capital city Patna is also under a yellow alert for Monday. The forecast predicts a cloudy sky with a high likelihood of light rain and strong winds accompanied by thunder. The anticipated 2 to 3 degrees Celsius drop in maximum temperature should bring much-needed relief from the city’s persistent humidity.
