6 Killed In Stampede At Haridwar's Mansa Devi Temple

Rescue operations are underway, and the injured are being transported to hospitals for medical treatment. The cause of the stampede is currently unknown.

At least six people were killed in a stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi Temple on Sunday, while dozens have been injured in the incident, as per officials. A rescue operation has been launched and injured people have been rushed to hospital.

The revered Mansa Devi temple sits on a hilltop in Haridwar and can be accessed only through cable cars or by foot via a flight of stairs. The temple witnessed a huge influx of devotees on the culmination of the month of Sawan on Sunday, with many Kanwariyas visiting the religious site who were among the victims of the stampede.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on X that the State Disaster Response Force, local police, and other rescue teams have reached the site and have launched relief and rescue operations.

He also said that he is in constant contact with the local administration and is closely monitoring the situation.

Rumour Triggered Stampede

Garhwal District Commissioner, Vinay Shankar Pandey told ABP News that he was on his way to Haridwar and that the situation at the spot is now normal. He hinted that the stampede might have been caused by a rumour but added that the exact cause is a matter of investigation and a ministerial enquiry will be set up later.

Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police, Pramendra Singh Dobal said that according to preliminary information, a rumour about an electric shock on stairs 100 metres down the temple route triggered the stampede, adding that further investigation is underway.

Around 35 injured were admitted to the hospital, out of which the deaths of six people have been confirmed, he added.
