Gujarat Cop Dies While Trying To Catch SUV Smuggling Liquor In Surendranagar

The accident occurred around 2:30 AM, near Kathada village on Dasada-Patdi road on Tuesday while the policeman was trying to catch an SUV involved in smuggling illegal liquor.

A 50-year-old policeman was killed while trying to intercept an SUV that was allegedly involved in smuggling illegal liquor in Gujarat's Surendranagar district in the wee hours of Tuesday (November 5).

The accident occurred around 2:30 AM, near Kathada village on Dasada-Patdi road a police official told news agency PTI.

Sub-inspector J M Pathan, member of the state monitoring cell (SMC), received a tip-off about an SUV being used for smuggling liquor. Pathan along with members of the SMC set up a plan to try and intercept the SUV allegedly used for liquor smuggling.

They were standing on a turn blocking the road when the suspected SUV approached them. However, the vehicle and a trailer that was behind it somehow managed to pass the turning, PTI reported, citing a pres release by the police.

When the police officer tried to move out of the way, he noticed another oncoming SUV of the SMC that was chasing the bottleggers. However, the headlights blinded him, causing him to lose control and banging him against the back of the trailer.

The police officer sustained severe head injuries due to the impact, following which he was rushed to a primary health centre at Dasada. Later, he was also referred to a government hospital at Viramgam, but was declared dead.

An FIR was registered at Dasada police station and further investigation was underway, the release said.

Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi paid tribute to the "brave officer" Pathan for sacrificing his life in the fight against prohibition.

In a post on X, Sanghavi wrote: "PSI J M Pathan, an aspiring officer of the state monitoring cell, died while trying to catch a suspected vehicle full of liquor on Dasada-Patdi road of Surendranagar district. Gujarat Police has lost a brave, hardworking officer. A tribute to this brave officer who laid down his life in the fight against prohibition. Heartfelt condolences to his family."

The SMC is a special branch of the Gujarat police tasked with implementing the Gujarat Prohibition Act (Amended) 2017 and the Prevention of Gambling Act, 1887.
