Gondia: Shivshahi Bus Overturns While Trying To Avoid A Collision With Bike, 9 Bodies Recovered

The injured passengers were transported to KTS District Hospital in Gondia with the help of ambulances and police personnel.

A bus accident occurred on the Gondia-Kohmara State Highway near Khajri village on November 29, leaving at least 9 people dead and 25 injured. The accident took place between 12:00 and 12:30 PM when a Shivshahi bus (MH 09/EM 1273), travelling from Bhandara to Gondia, overturned while trying to avoid a bike.

The bus was en route to Gondia via Sakoli and Lakhani when a bike appeared suddenly around a sharp turn. The driver swerved to avoid a collision, but the high-speed manoeuvre caused the bus to overturn. There were 35 passengers on board at the time of the accident, and emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver fled the scene shortly after the crash. The injured passengers were transported to KTS District Hospital in Gondia with the help of ambulances and police personnel. Rescue teams are using a crane to lift the overturned bus.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while offering condolences, announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

"Distressed by the loss of lives in the bus mishap in Gondia, Maharashtra. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected," PM Modi said in a social media post.

"An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," his X post read.

The state government has also promised further support to the families as the investigation progresses.

Maharashtra's caretaker Chief Minister has directed the Transport Administration to provide Rs 10 lakh in immediate assistance to the families of the victims. The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident and the whereabouts of the driver.

Meanwhile, former chief minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said all the possible help is being extended to the injured and arrangements are being made to shift them to Nagpur if required.

"It is very unfortunate that a Shivshahi bus met with an unfortunate accident near Sadak Arjun in Gondia district in which some passengers died. I pay my heartfelt respects to the deceased. We share the grief of his family," Fadnavis said in an X post.

"I have also told the Collector of Gondia ‍to make arrangements to shift them to Nagpur if required. Senior administration officials have reached the spot and are coordinating relief efforts. I pray to God for the speedy recovery of the injured in this incident," his social media post added.
