Gaurav Gogoi Replaces Bhupen Borah As Congress Assam President
Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, currently serves as the deputy leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha.

The Congress has appointed Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi as the new president of the Assam unit on Monday, replacing Bupen Kumar Borah ahead of next year's Assam assembly elections. The party has also appointed three new working presidents, Roselina Tirkey, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and Pradip Sarkar, to the state unit.
Assam's current assembly term will last until May 2026, and the Congress is in full swing to wrest power from the BJP following two consecutive losses in the state assembly.
"Congress President has appointed Gaurav Gogoi as the President and three Working Presidents of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, with immediate effect," AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said, news agency PTI reported.
He stated that the people of Assam look forward to seeing Gaurav Gogoi as their CM, as even after the entire delimitation process, he was elected with a thumping majority.
"Let Assam CM say whatever he wants to but the people of Assam look forward to see Gaurav Gogoi as their CM. Last time also, Himanta Biswa Sarma put his entire resources to defeat him. The entire delimitation process has been done to corner him, but people elected him with a thumping majority... The PCC collective leadership with Gaurav Gogoi is going to bring itself for Assam," Venugopal said, ANI reported.

He added that it was a privilege to work alongside the committed and inspiring senior leaders and grassroots workers of the Congress in Assam. ''Their wisdom, experience and dedication to the party has taught me many things. I look forward to working with my seniors and colleagues. In the days to come I will seek the blessings of the people of Assam. I am confident that together we can create a better future for our state. Joi Ai Axom ! Jai Hind!'' he added.
In an interview with ANI, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi also said, "I heartily thank Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal and other leaders for placing such a big responsibility on my shoulders... Many of our senior colleagues have got new responsibilities. We will work together with everyone... We expect the blessings of the people of Assam in the times to come, and we will together take a pledge for a new Assam in the upcoming assembly elections."
Venugopal also added in his statement that the party appreciates the contributions made by the outgoing PCC president, Borah. "Roselina Tirkey is being relieved of her current responsibilities as AICC Secretary," it said.
The appointment of Gogoi as the new Assam Congress president signals that the party intends to contest the upcoming assembly elections under his leadership, positioning him as the likely chief ministerial candidate.
"Congress President has also approved the proposal for the appointment of Chairpersons of Campaign Committee, Coordination Committee, Manifesto Committee, Publicity Committee, and Election Management Committee of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, with immediate effect," Venugopal further added.
Meanwhile, the outgoing state chief, Bhupen Borah, has been named chairperson of the Campaign Committee. Debabrata Saikia will lead the Coordination Committee, Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi will head the Manifesto Committee, and fellow MP Rakibul Hussain will chair the Publicity Committee.
