Two suffocated to death after a massive fire broke out in a furniture godown in west Delhi’s Kirti Nagar area in the early hours of Sunday. The two individuals were asleep in a room on the godown’s terrace. The Delhi Fire Services received a call regarding the fire around 4:25 AM and around six fire tenders reached the spot.

"A call regarding the fire in the furniture godown was received around 4.25 am on Sunday and six fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Two people were rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital," a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said, as per PTI.

The fire had reached the terrace of the godown. When the premises were checked after the fire was put out, they found one room on the terrace locked from the inside. The DFS team broke down the doors where they found the two people lying inside. They were rushed to a hospital where they were declared dead.

The deceased have been identified as Atul Rai (45) from Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh, a labourer, and Nand Kishor (65), a rickshaw puller, a resident of Bihar's Gaya. Rai worked at the godown and also slept there. Prima facie, they died of suffocation, as per PTI.

The reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained and the forensics team was called in to ascertain the cause of the fire. Legal action will be initiated accordingly.

This is after a massive fire broke out at a factory in the Alipur area on Saturday evening and 34 fire tenders were pressed to service.

There has been no report of any injuries in the blaze and an operation was undertaken to douse the flames, said the official from Delhi Fire Services, reported PTI.

The DFS received a call regarding the fire at the factory in the Firni area of Alipur at around 4 pm, the official said.

According to the fire officials, the warehouse was suspected to be used for the storage of paper and chemicals but the exact details are not available yet.
