Covid-19 Cases In India Cross 5,000 Mark; Kerala Worst-Hit: Check State-Wise Data

India's COVID-19 cases surpassed 5,000, led by Kerala, prompting nationwide mock drills to ensure preparedness. The Centre urges states to maintain oxygen and medicine supplies.

Amid the increase in the number of Covid cases, the tally crossed the 5,000 mark, with Kerala remaining the most affected state, followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi, reports news agency PTI quoting the Union Health Ministry. In view of the increase in cases, the Centre is conducting mock drills to check facility-level preparedness for COVID-19. All states have been instructed to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines in view of rising cases of Covid.

There are 5,755 active cases in India, and four fresh deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours. A total of 1100 new cases have been detected in the past 24 hours.

According to the official sources, most cases are mild and managed under home care.

Kerala has reported a maximum of 1806 cases presently.

In Delhi, a total of 160 new cases have been reported in the national capital, and the total tally has reached 665. During this, 87 people have also diagnosed free of the infection.

In Maharashtra, 86 new cases were reported on Saturday, taking the total count since January to 1,362, the health department said. Of these new cases, 31 were detected in Pune city and two in its rural parts, 28 in Mumbai, seven in Pimpri Chinchwad township near Pune, six in Thane, four in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, three in Nagpur, two in Mira Bhayandar, and one each in Satara, Kolhapur and Sangli, an official statement said. The health department has conducted 16,226 COVID-19 tests since January, of which 1,362 were reported positive.

On Saturday, Tamil Nadu Health and Public Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian urged people not to panic and stated that the current strain of the virus is mild and does not pose a serious health risk.

“There is no need to panic. The strain of the coronavirus currently in circulation is not a severe variant. It is a weak type and does not cause long-term complications,” the minister said. He emphasised that wearing masks in Tamil Nadu is not mandatory at present but advised the public to exercise caution.
