Chennai Power Shutdown Scheduled For May 2 Amid Scorching Heat — Details

The power shutdown is expected to last from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, affecting several localities in Chennai.

As summer temperatures soar across Tamil Nadu, residents in parts of Chennai are bracing for a scheduled power shutdown on May 2 due to routine maintenance work by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO).

The outage is expected to last from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, affecting several localities in Sothuperumbedu and Ennore. TANGEDCO has assured consumers that power will be restored earlier if maintenance concludes ahead of schedule.

Sothuperumbedu: Kumaran Nagar, Sengalamman Nagar, Vijayanallur, Siruniyam, Parthasarathi Nagar, Vijaya Garden.

Ennore: Kathivakkam, Ennore Bazzar, Sakthi Ganapathi Nagar, Kaattukupam, Nehru nagar, Saasthiri Nagar, Anna Nagar, Sivanpadaiveethi, Valluvar Nagar, Kamarajar Nagar, SVM Nagar, VOC Nagar, Ulaganathapuram, Chinnakuppam, Periyakuppam, Ernavoorkuppam, ETPS Vaariya Kudi Iruppu Paguthi, Ernavoor, Jothi Nagar, Mugathuavarakuppam, Ennorekuppam, Thaazhanguppam, Nettukuppam, Ramanathapuram, Shanmugapuram.

Weather Forecast

The power cut comes at a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal temperatures across the region. Chennai is expected to record a maximum of 37°C and a minimum of 29°C, with partly cloudy skies.

IMD further warned that maximum temperatures could remain 2–3°C above normal in several pockets of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from May 1 to May 3, with elevated temperatures continuing sporadically on May 4 and 5.

On Wednesday, Vellore reported the state’s highest maximum temperature at 40.5°C, while Karur Paramathi recorded the lowest minimum in the plains at 23.5°C.

With soaring temperatures and potential discomfort due to the power outage, residents are advised to: Stay hydrated and avoid direct sunlight during peak hours. Keep mobile devices and essential electronics charged ahead of the shutdown and to minimize outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.
