The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested Ashish Pandey in connection with a graft case against R G Kar college ex-principal Sandip Ghosh. Pandey is understood to be a Trinamool Congress youth leader.
Pandey, who is said to be close to Sandip Ghosh, was under the probe agency's scanner. He was questioned by the CBI on September 30, news agency PTI reported.
The former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh was arrested in the corruption case on September 2. However, later the probe agency took his custody in the August 9 rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the medical college in Kolkata.
Acting on the directions of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI registered its FIR and booked Ghosh and three Kolkata-based private entities including Ma Tara Traders of Madhya Jhorehat, Banipur, Howrah; Eshan Cafe of 4/1, Belgachia, and Khama Louha.
The agency has filed the FIR against Ghosh and the private entities under Indian Penal Code sections 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating) and the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The premises of all the entities named in the CBI FIR were also searched during the operation.
On Tuesday, the CBI had grilled Sandip Ghosh and the suspended officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, in Kolkata in connection with the Kolkata doctor's rape and murder at RG Kar. They were interrogated at the Presidency Correctional Home where the two have been lodged, PTI reported.
They were first questioned separately and then together, a CBI official said. "The two were questioned by our officers regarding the woman medic murder case. We have recorded their versions. The interrogation continued till late on Tuesday," he said.
A Kolkata court on Monday suspended police officer Mondal till October 4 in connection with the case. The judicial custody of the former RG Kar principal was also extended. The court also asked the probe agency to interrogate Ghosh and Mondal in jail.
