Bihar: Caught Stealing, Woman Tonsured & Paraded Across Town By Mob In West Champaran District

In Bihar, a woman was tortured and paraded around town after being accused of stealing. Police rescued her but was arrested on theft charges

Bihar News: In a disturbing incident of mob justice, a woman in Bihar's West Champaran district was tortured and paraded around town after she was allegedly caught stealing. The incident occurred in the district's Valmiki Nagar area on Friday afternoon, according to police.

As per Valmiki Nagar station house officer (SHO), Sanjay Kumar, the woman was caught stealing by locals, following which the mob shaved her head and subsequently paraded her around town.

After receiving the information about the incident, police arrived at the scene and rescued her, the officer told news agency PTI.

As per police, this was not the first incident when the woman was accused of stealing as she has been involved in two theft cases previously.

"After a thorough investigation, it was found that the victim was involved in two cases of theft previously and was also arrested," the SHO said.

"In this case too, police arrested the woman and she is currently under judicial custody. Police have also registered a case against at least 100 people for parading her," he added.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, two women clashed in Bihar's Araria district after one of them, a shopkeeper, refused to sell items worth Rs 15 on credit.

"The complainant, Bulbul Khatoon, who suffered serious injuries to her nose, alleged that the accused, Halima Khatoon, slapped her son when he went to the shop in Samaula to get a few items on credit on Friday, Ragvendra Kuma Singh," Station House Officer (SHO) of Forbesganj police said.

Later, when Bulbul confronted Halima at her shop, the accused allegedly hit her with an iron rod. Family members of Halima also joined in the assault, the SHO said.

Some media reports claimed the woman's nose was chopped, which the police discredited and said the information was false. "She is receiving treatment at a hospital," the SHO added.

"Forbesganj police station registered a case under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a complaint filed by the victim", he said.
