Former CM Atishi, Gopal Rai Among 11 AAP MLAs Suspended From Delhi Assembly

Several Delhi MLAs were suspended for protesting with Jai Bhim slogans and removal of Bhagat Singh and Ambedkar's pictures during the Lieutenant Governor's address.

At least eight MLAs were suspended for the day before the Lieutenant Governor's address began in the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday. The opposition MLAs were raising Jai Bhim slogans and protesting the removal of Bhagat Singh and Ambedkar's pictures. Marshals were called in to remove the MLAs from the house. Former Delhi CM Atishi, former Minister Gopal Rai, and two-term Delhi Cantonment MLA Virender Singh Kadian were among those who were suspended.

After being suspended by Speaker Vijender Gupta, the 11 AAP MLAs staged a protest on the Delhi Assembly premises.

The AAP had alleged that the portraits of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh from the offices of CM and ministers located in the Delhi secretariat and assembly. "Does BJP think that Narendra Modi is greater than Baba Saheb Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh? Earlier, Amit Shah had insulted Baba Saheb," Atishi said. 

"In the Parliament offices of their ministers Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Kapil Mishra, where the pictures of Baba Saheb and Bhagat Singh used to be hung, Narendra Modi's picture has been put up," Atishi asked.

The BJP, however, refuted the claim. BJP MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah said: "The pictures of Dr BR Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh are there (in the CM office). They are just lying..."

Delhi L-G Says BJP's Promises Would Be Fulfilled

The Assembly session was suspended till Tuesday noon after the L-G's speech. During his speech, L-G Saxena said the Yamuna will be completely cleaned and restored and clean water will be provided to all Delhi residents. 

He also said that work would be done and the promises made to the general public before the elections by the current dispensation would be fulfilled.

"The priority of the government will be on the improvement of roads the government will try to increase the revenue in Delhi so that funds are available for schemes Schemes that increase employment will be implemented. Our goal is to rank 1 in the Swachh Survekshan table. Steps will be taken to make Delhi a -class city," he said.
