Andhra Pradesh: Woman Hacked To Death By Family Over Interfaith Marriage In Nellore
Ahead of the murder in Nellore, the victim, Shravani's parents strongly opposed the interfaith marriage and under the pretense of reconciliation convinced Shravani to return to their home.
Nellore news: A couple from Vadmanabhasatram Pallepalem in Kodavalur mandal, Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh, have been arrested for murdering their daughter after she married a man from a different religion. The murder, which took place a month ago, came to light only recently after the victim's husband, Sheikh Rabbani Basha, grew suspicious and lodged a complaint with the police.
The victim, Shravani, who had been staying with her parents following a marital dispute and divorce proceedings from her first husband, fell in love with Rabbani, a painter from North Amulur in Allur Mandal. The couple married against her family's wishes and started living together. However, her parents strongly opposed the interfaith marriage and, under the pretense of reconciliation, convinced Shravani to return to their home.
Once home, her parents, with the help of Shravani’s sister and brother, subjected her to brutal torture, insisting she leave Rabbani and marry someone from their own community. Despite enduring severe physical and emotional abuse, Shravani refused to abandon her husband. However, the repeated assaults eventually led to her death. In a bid to cover up the crime, the parents, along with the help of neighbors, buried her body near their house.
The crime remained undiscovered for nearly a month until Rabbani visited the town and noticed the strange behavior of Shravani’s parents. Sensing something was wrong, he reported the matter to the police. Upon investigation, authorities uncovered the truth and arrested Shravani’s parents. During interrogation, they confessed to the murder and detailed how they had buried her body to conceal the crime.
Shravani’s brother and sister, who were also involved in the murder, are currently absconding, while a neighbor, Chenchaiah, who assisted in burying the body, has also been charged. The incident has caused an uproar in the local community, sparking widespread condemnation over yet another instance of honour killing.
