Tomato Prices Touch Rs 100 Per Kg In Retail Markets In Delhi As Monsoon Disrupts Supply

The data compiled by the Department of Consumer Affairs showed that the staple commodity was being sold at Rs 93 per kg in Delhi and the average all-India price touched Rs 73.76 per kg on Saturday

Tomato prices climbed to touch Rs 100 per kg in the retail markets in New Delhi on Saturday as extreme weather conditions across the country disrupted supplies of the produce. The supply chain for the commodity was impacted by the weather events related to the monsoon season.

According to a report by PTI, tomatoes were being sold by Safal outlets at Rs 100 per kg in the national capital area. Mother Dairy operates the Safal outlets in the country. The data compiled by the Department of Consumer Affairs showed that the staple commodity was being sold at Rs 93 per kg in Delhi on Saturday. Meanwhile, the average price of the commodity touched Rs 73.76 per kg at an all-India level on July 20, 2024.

The report cited a senior government official and said that this surge in prices can be explained by the disturbance cause in supply after excess heat followed by excess rainfall caused havoc on the produce. “Prices of tomato, potato and onion are ruling high in Delhi and some other cities. Extreme heat followed by spells of excess rainfall disrupted supplies, causing a spike in prices in consuming areas,” the official pointed out.

The all-India average price of onion and potato stood at Rs 44.16 per kg and Rs 37.22 per kg respectively.

Other food staples such as green vegetables are also witnessing a sudden increase in the prices. While bitter gourd was being sold at Rs 49 per kg on Saturday, the cost of lady finger stood at Rs 49 per kg.
