Stock Market: Sensex Rises 150 Points, Nifty Reclaims 17,000 Amid Positive Global Cues. Metal, Realty Lead

Stock update: On the 30-share Sensex platform, IndusInd Bank, Wipro, Tata Steel, TCS, HDFC twins, Reliance, Wipro emerged early winners

The two key equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, on Tuesday opened in the green tracking improved global sentiments.

At 9.40 am, the BSE Sensex was 808. On the other hand, the NSE Nifty 50, which reclaimed 17,000 levels, was trading at 17,021, up 35 points.

On the 30-share Sensex platform, IndusInd Bank, Wipro, Tata Steel, TCS, HDFC twins, Reliance, Wipro emerged early winners. On the flip side, Airtel, TechM, Tata Motors, Asian Paints, Sun Pharma were among the early losers.

Shares of PNC Infratech gained over 4 per cent after the company was declared lowest (L-1) bidder for a 4-lane highway project worth Rs 819 crore.

In the broader market, bullish sentiment was also visible, as Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices advanced up to 0.1 per cent.

Sectorwise, barring Nifty Pharma index, all sectors swimmed in the sea of green. Nifty Metal, Nifty Media, and Nifty Realty indices gained up to 0.5 per cent.

In the previous session on Monday, the BSE Sensex closed at 57,654, up 127 points. On the other hand, the NSE Nifty50 ended day’s trading at 16,986, up 41 points.

In Asian markets, Seoul, Japan, Shanghai, and Hong Kong were trading in the green.

The US markets ended on a mixed note on Monday.

"Early optimism could be seen in Tuesday's trade on the back of positive cues from other Asian indices even as the US markets ended mixed overnight. The financial troubles in key US and European banking entities could be waning after the recent troubles, which is providing some confidence to investors, although one may not rule out that the overall undertone still remains that of cautious to negative," Prashanth Tapse, senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said in his pre-market opening comment.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.29 per cent to $77.89 per barrel.

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 890.64 crore on Monday, according to exchange data.

Meanwhile, the rupee gained 15 paise to 82.16 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday as the weakness of the American currency and a positive trend in domestic equities strengthened investor sentiments. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 82.20 against the dollar, then climbed to 82.16, registering a rise of 15 paise over its previous close.

On Monday, the rupee closed at 82.31 against the US currency.The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.25 per cent to 102.59.
