Stock Market: Sensex Marginally Rises 60 Points, Nifty Trades Above 16,300 Amid Volatility
Stock update: On the BSE platform, Tata Steel was the top loser, down 2.25 per cent, followed by Titan, Reliance, Sun Pharma, Infosys, and others
New Delhi: The key equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, on Tuesday opened trade with marginal gains after sharp fall in two sessions amid high volatility.
After oscillating between gains and losses in the first hour of trading, the 30-share BSE Sensex was up nominally 60 points to 54,532, while the broader NSE Nifty was trading at 16,315, up 14 points at 10.30 am.
On the BSE platform, Tata Steel was the top loser, down 2.25 per cent, followed by Titan, Reliance, Sun Pharma, Infosys, and others. On the flip side, Bharti Airtel was top gainer among the 30 constituents, up 1.80 per cent, followed by Asian Paints, HUL, Ultracemco, Maruti, and others.
In the broader markets, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices also opened in the positive zone, higher by up to 0.86 per cent.
On NSE, 12 out of the 15 sector gauges were trading in the green.
Sectorwise, Nifty Auto, FMCG, Media, and PSB indices were leading by up to 1 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty IT, Metals, and energy packs were trading in the negative territory.
On the BSE, the overall market breadth stood strong as 1,727 shares were advancing, while 739 were declining.
In the previous session on Monday, the Sensex ended 364 points (0.67 per cent) lower at 54,470, while the NSE Nifty declined 109 points (0.67 per cent) to end at 16,301.
"The mother market US has turned distinctly weak with Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Dow at 1-year lows. European markets are moving in tandem with US markets. Relatively India is doing better thanks to consistent buying by DIIs and retail investors," V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services, told the PTI.
In the Asian markets, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Seoul were trading lower, while Shanghai quoted marginally higher.
In the US, markets had fallen sharply on Monday.
Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 1.99 per cent to $103.88 per barrel.
According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued to offload shares worth Rs 3,361.80 crore on Monday.
