NEW DELHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday termed the Centre's announcement of Rs. 6,000 per year to farmers as an insult to everything they stand and work for even as he alleged that the Modi government destroyed the lives of farmers over the past five years. Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, in the Interim Budget, said farmers will be provided Rs 6,000 per year, which amounts to Rs 16.44 daily, in three installments under a central government scheme. "Dear NoMo, 5 years of your incompetence and arrogance has destroyed the lives of our farmers. Giving them Rs. 17 a day is an insult to everything they stand and work for," Gandhi tweeted using hashtag 'AakhriJumlaBudget'. Senior Congress leader and Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said the Centre's income scheme for farmers is like rubbing salt on their wound after their sheer neglect in last five years. "Rs. 17 a day to the Farmers is nothing else but an insult to them. Giving them such a meager amount is like rubbing salt on their wound after their sheer neglect in last 5 years," Gehlot said. Presenting the Interim Budget, Goyal sought to address some of the distress that the farm sector has been facing. He said the scheme will be "fully funded by the central government". The Congress has been dismissive of the budget describing it as the "BJP's manifesto" for the Lok Sabha elections and an "Account for Votes".
