Google Layoffs: Tech Giant Fires 200 Employees From Core Team, Plans To Relocate Roles To India And Mexico

Google Layoffs: According to a statement given by a Google spokesperson, employees affected by the layoffs will have the opportunity to apply for other available positions within the company

Layoffs at Google do not seem to stop anytime soon; now, the tech giant has fired its workforce by nearly 200 employees from its "core team" and shifted specific roles overseas as part of cost-cutting measures. Approximately 50 positions were eliminated from the engineering team situated at its California headquarters. According to a CNBC report citing internal documents of the company, it plans to recruit replacement workers for these roles in India and Mexico.

The core team at Google is responsible for crafting the "technical underpinnings powering the company's leading products," in addition to ensuring online user safety and maintaining its global IT infrastructure.

According to the report, Asim Husain, Vice President of the Google Developer Ecosystem, emailed employees last week to inform them of the layoffs. Documents indicate that this is the largest workforce reduction the team has undergone.

“We intend to maintain our current global footprint while also expanding in high-growth global workforce locations so that we can operate closer to our partners and developer communities," he said in the email.

According to a statement given to the New York Post by a Google spokesperson, employees affected by the layoffs will have the opportunity to apply for other available positions within the company.“We’re simplifying our structures to give employees more opportunity to work on our most innovative and important advances and our biggest company priorities while reducing bureaucracy and layers,” the spokesperson said.

Since the start of 2023, Google's parent company, Alphabet, has been actively reducing its workforce as part of its strategic restructuring efforts. This initiative was launched following the company's announcement of plans to trim approximately 12,000 positions, constituting approximately 6 per cent of its total workforce. The job cuts continue this year as well, with multiple rounds of layoffs announced one after the other, including the latest one.
