GM Layoffs: General Motors (GM) has laid off around 1,000 employees worldwide as part of a cost-cutting initiative to strengthen its position in the competitive automotive market. Most of those affected were white-collar workers, who were notified of their layoffs via email early Friday morning.
Adam Bernard, a GM veteran with 38 years of service, was among those impacted by the layoffs. In a LinkedIn post, Bernard, who served as Associate Director of Competitor Intelligence, shared his shock at the firm’s decision to let him go.
In his LinkedIn post, Bernard wrote, “Well, in unexpected news, I was let go from GM at 5.07 am this morning via email, along with (I hear unofficially) about 1,000 people globally. I wonder what I should do next...?
Bernard joined GM in 1986 as an analyst. Over nearly four decades, he advanced his career while earning an MBA from Harvard University. For the past 17 years, he led a team that analysed competitors' strategies, as per his LinkedIn description.
In a follow-up post, he added that he is actively looking for new opportunities. “Hi everyone. Following up on my earlier post, I am considering new roles and would appreciate your support. I hadn't planned on starting a new chapter at this point but I still love the auto industry and am looking to stay connected. I have nearly four decades of experience, including 25 years in Competitor Intelligence. Thanks in advance for any connections, advice, or opportunities you can offer. #OpenToWork,” he wrote.
Several users expressed their opinion regarding how Bernard was laid off; one user wrote in the comment section, “A 5 am email is very unprofessional, especially to someone who has given so much to the company for so long. At least when GM Energy sacked half our org, we got a Teams call during work hours. I think you should start a consultancy or look at partnering with others in the Auto/ Mobility intelligence space such as Tu Le, Steve Greenfield, and Michael Dunne or venture capital with Assembly Ventures, MEDC, NewLab etc.”
