In the wake of the passing of iconic businessman Ratan Tata, condolences from around the world continue to pour in, as people from all walks of life share their memories and stories of the influential leader. Among the tributes, an old interview featuring Tesla CEO Elon Musk has resurfaced and gone viral on social media, showcasing Musk’s admiration for Tata.
In the interview with TV host Charlie Rose, Musk praised Tata's vision, particularly regarding affordable cars. "It’s a good idea to have affordable cars," Musk remarked, describing Ratan Tata as a "gentleman and scholar." He highlighted Tata's relentless drive to bring innovation to an industry that is fiercely competitive and challenging to break into.
However, Musk also pointed out potential difficulties that the Tata Nano, Tata's ambitious low-cost car, might encounter. "The cost of acquiring the car is much less of an issue than the cost of running the car," Musk noted, anticipating some of the hurdles the Nano would face, especially with rising fuel prices.

The Tata Nano, launched in 2009 at an initial price of Rs 1 lakh (around $2,300), was a revolutionary attempt to make cars affordable to India’s growing middle class. Ratan Tata envisioned the Nano as a safer, more affordable alternative to the two-wheelers that dominated Indian roads, representing a bold step toward enhancing the lives of millions.

Despite the initial excitement surrounding the Nano, the car encountered several challenges, including being perceived as "cheap" rather than affordable, concerns over safety, and the impact of increasing fuel costs. These factors ultimately contributed to its discontinuation in 2018.
Though the Tata Nano did not achieve the widespread success Ratan Tata had hoped for, it remains a vital part of his legacy. The car is a testament to Tata’s dedication to innovation for the masses and his commitment to improving lives through accessible technology. While the Nano project may have faced obstacles, it stands as an iconic symbol of Ratan Tata’s visionary leadership and enduring compassion in the automotive industry.
