Seven Months After Nellore Court 'Theft', Andhra Pradesh High Court Hands Over Case To CBI

Chief Justice PK Mishra pronounced the orders handing over the case to the central agency.

Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday transferred a theft case that happened in Nellore district court to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The police started the probe into the theft of documents pertaining to a case involving the minister from the Nellore district court, which happened on April 14, 2022.

Following the report of the Nellore Principal District Judge that the police investigation into the theft case was not done properly, the High Court took up suo motu cognizance of the matter. The District Principal Judge had also requested for an independent agency for the inquiry.

Chief Justice PK Mishra pronounced the orders handing over the case to the central agency. Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy informed the High Court that they have no objection to a CBI probe into the theft of documents pertaining to a case involving the minister from the Nellore district court.

In April, documents pertaining to the forgery and cheating case involving Minister Kakani were stolen from the Fourth Additional Judicial Magistrate Court in Nellore.

In December 2017, then-MLA Kakani accused Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and former minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy of accumulating massive wealth and provided documents as evidence.

Somireddy had filed a police report alleging that the documents given by Kakani were fabricated. In addition, a charge sheet was filed in the case.

The evidence provided in the case was stolen from the court on April 14, just a few days after Kakani became a minister. The thieves took away a bag containing documents, a few electronic items, and a few stamps.

The police started an inquiry after receiving a complaint from court officials. The stolen bag was eventually discovered in a gutter outside the court, but several documents were missing. Police have also arrested two suspects in the case.
