Prince Charles to be next head of Commonwealth
London [United Kingdom], April 20 (ANI): Prince Charles will be the next head of the Commonwealth, succeeding, his mother Queen Elizabeth.
Several media reports stated that the decision comes after the 53 leaders from Commonwealth nations met at Windsor for a retreat to discuss the issue as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in London this week.
On Thursday Queen Elizabeth II has voiced her wish for her son Prince Charles to succeed her as the leader of the Commonwealth nations.
"It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity to future generations and will decide one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949," local media quoted her as saying at the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
The Queen has been head of the Commonwealth since coming to the throne in 1952, but the position is not automatically held by the British monarch.
As the Queen no longer goes abroad, the current summit in London in all likelihood will be her last.
Prince Charles has represented her at recent CHOGMs outside the United Kingdom.(ANI)
