Oxford University Press declares 'Trump' Children's Word of the Year

London [U.K.], June 18 (ANI): The Oxford University Press has declared "Trump" to be Children's Word of the Year after analysing 131,798 short stories written by children taking part in a BBC competition.

The publishing house said in a statement that the word was chosen because of its significant increase in use - 839 percent - and the wide variety of contexts in which it was deployed, reports the New York Times.

It's the first time that a name, or proper noun, has won word of the year in either the children's or adult categories. Last year, the Children's Word was "refugee".

The contest asked kids to compose an original work of fiction on any subject or theme in no more than 500 words.

As a result, the word 'trump' appeared 2,296 times in the 2017 stories-as a noun (a trump), a proper noun (Trump the name) and as a verb (trumped, trumping), according to a news report.

Children also got creative, using the word in more than 100 mixes such as character names - Boggle Trump, Snozzle Trump, Trumpdiddlydumper and prefixes, suffixes and other fixes to become Trumpelstilskin, Trumpido, Trumpeon, Trumpyness and Trumpwinningtastic.

Runner-up words included Brexit, fake news, social media, vlog and super. (ANI)
