Paris Olympics 2024: France's High-Speed Rail Network Targeted by Vandalism Ahead of Opening Ceremony | ABP News

Hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics, France's high-speed rail network was severely vandalized on Friday, July 26. Authorities have stated that the attacks aimed to undermine the country's high-speed rail infrastructure. The vandalism has resulted in the cancellation of several trains and significant delays for many others. The affected areas include France's Atlantic, Northern, and Eastern rail lines. The fires set during the attacks have led to widespread disruptions, with approximately 80,000 passengers impacted. This disruption is particularly critical given the increased number of travelers during the summer vacation period. Jean-Pierre Farandou, head of the French railway company SNCF, informed AFP that attackers had set fire to multiple fiber optic cables that carry safety information for train drivers. The damage requires a meticulous manual repair process, demanding hundreds of workers to restore the network to full functionality. Railway officials have reported extensive damage and emphasized that repairs will be conducted with utmost caution to ensure the system's safety and reliability. This incident underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and highlights the challenges faced in maintaining and securing essential services during high-profile events. The disruption serves as a stark reminder of the importance of robust security measures for national infrastructure.
